COVID19: Doctors abandon isolation center in Nigeria

In line with the ongoing strike action which commenced on the 1st of July, 2020, resident doctors working at the Olabisi Onabanjo university teaching hospital in Sagamu, Ogun state have embarked on an indefinite strike action.

At the beginning of the strike, isolation centers were exempted from the action.

Some of the doctors’ demand in relation to the strike included non-implementation of the new minimum wage, hazard allowance, low entry level, absence of life insurance policy for its members and inappropriate remuneration.

According to the doctors, inaction from the state government after several warning letters had been sent only implied that the government had no interest in their issues. Hence the strike.

On Wednesday, doctors left the isolation centers following orders from the Association of Resident Doctors, OOUTH Sagamu.

This was confirmed by a statement from the ARD’s president, Popoola Mutiu and secretary Osundara Tope.

“Since the government has chosen to simply rub the issues without any form of real commitment, members working at the COVID19 isolation centers will henceforth join in the Industrial action.

We urge the government not to dethrone from any form of reasoning or shirk from responsibility expected from a sincere, considerate and truthful government. We call on the Ogun state government not to leave us up a creek without a paddle.

Our service to the people should not be abridged by the ineptitude of the government. We work for the common good and sound health of the people of Ogun state”.
