The role of a parent in a child’s life cannot be over-emphasized. Being a parent goes beyond providing their basic needs like food, shelter, clothing and paying for their education. The relationship that exists between you and your child goes a long way in determining your child’s future. Children listen majorly to two people; their parents and their teachers.

As children develop from infants to teens to adults they undergo a series of developmental stages that are important to all aspects of their lives including physical, intellectual, emotional, mental and social.  The role of the parent is to act as a role model and provide encouragement, support, and access to activities that would help the child to grow into a proper adult.

As a parent, your first and basic duty is to provide your child with his/her basic needs ranging from clothing to food to shelter to good education. Every child is entitled to these basic needs.

Irrespective of your job, money, status or schedule, take out time to play with your child. Create a free atmosphere where your child feels extremely comfortable playing with you than running away from you.

Show interest in every little aspect of your child’s life. In some cases you do not need to  dig deep into everything but showing a little interest shows how much you love and care for them. As a child grows older, there are many aspects of his/her life that requires extra attention. You may not be aware of this until you begin to show interests.

This is the most important part of a parent-child relationship. If your child doesn’t find peace in communicating with you, then you have failed as a parent. Be a best friend to your child no matter how many of them you have. Cultivate a habit of gisting with your child from a very young age. Find out every little detail about their interaction with friends, teachers etc. Ask about how they feel, what they want and how they want it. DO NOT SCOLD THEM WHEN THEY OPEN UP TO YOU. Most parents are guilty of this action. Stop scolding your children when they tell you what’s going on in their lives because they won’t come back. Stop instilling fear in the hearts of your children.

To discipline your child doesn’t necessarily mean you must flog the child. There are several ways to effectively discipline a child without using a rod. These includes;

  • Take Away Privileges
  • Place Your Child in Time-Out
  • Ignore Mild Misbehavior
  • Provide Logical Consequences
  • Allow for Natural Consequences
  • Reward Good Behavior
  • Be silent
  • Grounding

Disciplining and correcting your child is your basic and unavoidable responsibility. Discipline is effective when done properly.
